It was fairly similar to Ivar&#8217;s, but a bit less flavorful (this could be because we put only half of the recommended amount of onion in).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 (6 1\/2 ounce) cans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/clam-226\"> minced clams<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1 cup finely chopped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/onion-148\"> onion<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1 cup finely diced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/celery-216\"> celery<\/a><\/li>\n<li>2 cups finely diced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/potato-106\"> potatoes<\/a><\/li>\n<li>3\/4 cup <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/butter-141\">butter<\/a> or 3\/4 cup <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/margarine-421\"> margarine<\/a><\/li>\n<li>3\/4 cup <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/flour-64\"> flour<\/a><\/li>\n<li>4 cups <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/half-and-half-445\"> half-and-half<\/a>, warmed<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/salt-359\"> salt<\/a>, to taste<\/li>\n<li>1 dash <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/pepper-337\"> pepper<\/a><\/li>\n<li>1\/2 teaspoon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.food.com\/library\/sugar-139\"> sugar<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<h2>Directions:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<div>In a medium saucepan, drain the juice from the clams; set the clams aside.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Combine clam juice with the onions, celery and potatoes.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Add enough water to barely cover and simmer, covered, over medium heat until the potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>In a large saucepan, melt the butter.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Add flour and stir in to the butter.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Slowly whisk in the warm half-and-half.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Cook and whisk until smooth and thick, about 5 minutes.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>If you want a thinner chowder, add 1\/2 to 3\/4 cup water or clam broth.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Add the vegetables with their cooking liquid, clams, salt, pepper and sugar to the pan.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Stir well and adjust the seasonings if necessary.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We tried a FoodNetwork clam chowder recipe which claimed to be &#8220;Ivar&#8217;s&#8221;.
