I\u2019d planned on a simple wooden trainer \u2013 but he had other ideas. After saying that \u201chis dad deserved the best\u201d \u2013 he talked over his options with me then spent the day in the shop making a rather awesome knife. <\/p>\n<p>I was impressed, as it was a lot of time-consuming work. We started with an old piece of scrap, a half finished milling prototype for a knife I made a while back. He used files to finish shaping the blade. The blade was made out of aluminum, and he insisted on 5 sanding passes to get the blade face to look just right. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhhh.org\/joeboy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/blade_for_dad_p1_July_8th_2018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hhhh.org\/joeboy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/blade_for_dad_p1_July_8th_2018.jpg\" alt=\"blade_for_dad_p1_July_8th_2018\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2181\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once he was happy with what the blade looked like \u2013 we stamped in his dad\u2019s name on one side, and \u201cI love you dad on the other\u201d.  He even made sure we checked that \u201cI love you dad\u201d would be right way up, and readable, when his dad was using the knife. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhhh.org\/joeboy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/blade_for_dad_p2_July_8th_2018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hhhh.org\/joeboy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/blade_for_dad_p2_July_8th_2018.jpg\" alt=\"blade_for_dad_p2_July_8th_2018\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2182\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We watched a bunch of YouTube videos on para-cord wrapping knife handles. Once we found a pattern he liked, we drilled the handle and he wrapped it up.   <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhhh.org\/joeboy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/blade_for_dad_p3_July_8th_2018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hhhh.org\/joeboy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/blade_for_dad_p3_July_8th_2018.jpg\" alt=\"blade_for_dad_p3_July_8th_2018\" width=\"2178\" height=\"2688\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a tricky process, as he had to hold tension on the cord, while setting the pattern on the top and bottom of the blade.  I offered to do the wrapping, but he wanted to do it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhhh.org\/joeboy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/blade_for_dad_p4_July_8th_2018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hhhh.org\/joeboy\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/blade_for_dad_p4_July_8th_2018.jpg\" alt=\"blade_for_dad_p4_July_8th_2018\" width=\"2321\" height=\"2843\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the end I was really impressed with what he made.
