I ended up changing my mind about how to deliver filament to the printer. In the end I went with a simple support for a spool of filament. At the base of the support I drilled a hole running diagonally into the case - then opened the hole up and smoothed its edges with files. Now the filament feeds into the case at a point were it drops down almost directly from above the axis of movement for the extruder.
