My First Propane Foundry

I really liked the stockpot used in my second Australian foundry. It was about the perfect size, came with handles and a lit, and was cheap to boot. So when I made my next foundry in Seattle I used a stockpot lined with two inches of commercial refractory.

For this foundry I also switched over to using propane. The burner design is the same Reil burner that Konrad and I made for use with the Coffee Can Foundry. All I can say is propane is awesome. For $16 I got about 12 melts. Better yet after I got a little practice I got my melt times down to 20-25 mins for 300-400 ml of Aluminium. I also upgraded to using commercial green sand. I had several pours where I setup the foundry, started it melting, packed a cop and drag for a pattern, poured the melted metal, and cleaned up all in under an hour.

Most of my firings with this foundry were at night. I need to rebuild my burner. The opening orifice is a little large and it tends to run kind of rich. As a result there are usually a lip of blue flame jutting out off of the foundry.
