The Significance of (TM)(R)(C)

Steven Levy is cool. He writes good books. Go get Hackers and read it. It's great. It's got this great part in it detailing the history of hacking. Most of that takes place at MIT, and started with a group of model railroad enthusiasts who called themselves the Tech Model Railroad Club.

Now, of course, MIT has X-windows, which has the official names X and The X Window System which, of course, everybody calls X-windows. But that name's not allowed. Go figure.
